Understanding the Different Rinjani Treks

Mount Rinjani Summit Treks (3,726m)
A challenging ascent to the highest point on Mount Rinjani, offering a true summit experience with route options ranging from 2 to 4 days, depending on your time, fitness level, and preferred trekking style.
Summit treks can be completed over 2, 3, or 4 days. The 2-day / 1-night option is the fastest and most demanding, starting and finishing in Sembalun and focusing solely on reaching the summit. This option does not include a visit to Segara Anak Crater Lake or the hot springs and is best suited to fit, experienced hikers with limited time.
The 3- and 4-day options offer a more immersive experience and can be completed as a circuit trek, starting in either Senaru or Sembalun. These routes include time at the crater rim and Segara Anak Lake, with the opportunity to visit the hot springs and enjoy a more balanced pace on the mountain.
For experienced hikers seeking a more adventurous descent, the Torean route offers a dramatic and remote alternative, featuring waterfalls, deep valleys, and rugged terrain. This route is recommended only for confident, experienced trekkers due to its technical nature and challenging conditions.
Overall, Mount Rinjani summit treks are best suited to travellers with a good level of fitness, determination, and a desire to experience the mountain at its most demanding and rewarding.
Senaru Crater Rim and Second Summit treks (Puncak Sangkareang)
The Senaru Crater Rim and Second Summit treks offer a challenging and highly rewarding Mount Rinjani experience that is achievable for most healthy, active travellers with a reasonable level of fitness.
These routes focus on dramatic views from the Senaru Crater Rim, overlooking Segara Anak Lake and the volcanic landscape below, combined with the option to climb Puncak Sangkareang, Rinjani’s lesser-known second summit. While still physically demanding, these treks are less intense than a full ascent of the main summit and allow more time to enjoy the scenery, photography, and overall journey.
The Senaru Crater Rim trek is typically completed as a 2-day / 1-night adventure and is a popular choice for first-time Rinjani trekkers, couples, and travellers who want spectacular mountain views without committing to the main summit climb.
The Second Summit (Puncak Sangkareang) can be completed as either a 2-day or 3-day trek, depending on the route and pace. The 3-day option allows for a more relaxed itinerary, with additional time at the crater rim and a deeper exploration of the mountain’s unique landscapes.
These treks are ideal for travellers seeking a meaningful and challenging mountain experience, without the extreme demands of the main summit, while still enjoying a strong sense of achievement on Mount Rinjani.
