Day 2

Summary:

Day 2: Summit, Lake Segara Anak, & Senaru Crater Rim

Day 2 is the most demanding yet rewarding part of the trek, covering a total distance of 13.5km with an elevation gain of 1,756m. The day begins early with a challenging climb to the summit of Mount Rinjani, where you’ll be greeted by breathtaking panoramic views at sunrise. After descending to the Sembalun Crater Rim, the journey continues down to Segara Anak Lake, where you can relax by the lakeside and soak in the rejuvenating hot springs. In the afternoon, you’ll ascend to the Senaru Crater Rim, your campsite for the night, with stunning views of the surrounding valleys. For those who prefer more time at the lake, it’s possible to camp there instead. However, this results in a longer Day 3 and a later finish time. Let your guide know your preference as you plan the day’s itinerary!

Approximate Timeline:

  • 02:00 AM – Wake-up, prepare for summit. Hot drink/fill thermos flasks. Check equipment and head-torches.
  • 02:30 AM – Leave campsite, commence summit trek. Prolonged ascent with arduous volcanic sand/rocky terrain.
  • 05:30 AM – Aim to reach the summit around 05:30-06:00. Timing depends on individual and group fitness levels. There will be short 5-10 minute stops en route to the summit, but it’s important to keep moving, especially in the cold. Start with warm layers and adjust as needed. Sunrise typically occurs between 05:45-06:30 AM.
  • 07:00 AM – Leave the summit after enjoying the sunrise. Descend back to Sembalun Crater Rim campsite. Descent typically takes 1.5-2 hours, depending on fitness levels.
  • 09:00 AM – Cooked breakfast at Sembalun Crater Rim campsite.
  • 10:00 AM – Commence walking down into the crater.
  • 13:00 PM – Arrive at the lake. Relax by the lakeside and visit the hot springs.
  • 14:00 PM – Lunch and relaxation by the lake.
  • 15:00 PM – Commence trek to Senaru Crater Rim.

Useful Information:

  • Summit Climb: The ascent to the summit is steep and challenging, with loose volcanic sand and rocky terrain. Trekking poles are highly recommended to provide stability during both the climb and descent.
  • Layering for Warmth: Temperatures can be extremely cold at the summit, especially before sunrise. Start with warm layers, including gloves and a hat, and adjust as the trek progresses.
  • Hydration & Snacks: Staying hydrated is critical on Day 2 due to the demanding physical effort. Your guide will carry snacks, and thermoses with hot drinks will be available during summit stops.
  • Altitude Awareness: If you feel symptoms of altitude sickness (headache, nausea, dizziness), inform your guide immediately. Rest and hydration can often help alleviate mild symptoms.
  • Hot Springs: The thermal springs by Segara Anak Lake are an excellent way to relax tired muscles. Ensure you have a towel and swimwear if you plan to bathe.
  • Camping Options: Depending on group preferences, you can choose to camp at Segara Anak Lake or ascend to Senaru Crater Rim. Staying at the lake allows for more time to relax but makes Day 3 longer and more physically demanding.

Day 3

Summary:

Day 3: Descend to Senaru Village

On the final day of your adventure, you’ll descend from the breathtaking Senaru Crater Rim (2,620m AMSL) to the charming village of Senaru (600m AMSL). • 1:40 – 3:40 PM: Retrieve stored luggage and enjoy refreshments at Cafe Rinjani Dawn.
  • 2:15 – 4:15 PM: Depart Senaru for your next destination, whether it’s a hotel, harbor, or another leg of your adventure.

Note: The above timings are estimates and can vary based on group fitness levels, weather conditions, and personal preferences. If you need to descend faster or take longer breaks, inform your guide so the schedule can be adjusted accordingly.

Useful Information:

  • Steep Descent: The trek from Senaru Crater Rim to Senaru Village involves a steep descent with an elevation loss of 2,020m over a distance of 10.5km. Trekking poles are highly recommended to reduce strain on your knees and enhance stability, especially on uneven terrain.
  • Trail Conditions: The trail winds through dense tropical rainforest, which provides shade but can be humid and occasionally slippery. Sturdy footwear with good grip is essential for a safe and comfortable descent.
  • Wildlife: Keep an eye out for curious monkeys, particularly at rest stops where food is being prepared. While they can be amusing to observe, please refrain from attempting to pat or feed them, as this may encourage aggressive or unwanted behavior.
  • Rest Stops: Regular rest stops are scheduled to allow you to rehydrate, enjoy snacks, and take in the peaceful rainforest surroundings. Use these breaks to stretch and regain energy for the remainder of the descent.
  • Timing: Depending on group fitness levels and the number of breaks taken, the descent typically concludes in Senaru Village by early to mid-afternoon. If needed, discuss with your guide to adjust the pace or schedule.
  • Refreshments & Transport: Upon arriving in Senaru, refreshments will be waiting for you at Cafe Rinjani Dawn, where you can also retrieve any stored luggage. Transport to your next destination will be arranged for your convenience, ensuring a seamless end to your adventure.
  • Extra Items: Carry a lightweight rain jacket, as the rainforest climate can be unpredictable, with sudden showers possible. Sunscreen and insect repellent are also recommended.

Wonderful Experience 3D2N Package

One of the greatest but also one of the most challenging 3 days of my life...Climbing the Mount Rinjani in Indonesia with Rinjani Dawn adventures. But definitely worth the effort and sweat, the views are simply breathtaking and the experience itself unforgettable. Wonderful guide, sunsets and sunrises at the mountains and above the clouds, camping on the crater rims, relaxing in hot springs, wonderful porters who prepare you the food and drinks and tents, and carry all that stuff themselves. And not just basic food, but best food I have had in Indonesia, with even better views. Curry with chicken, banana pancakes, and even pop corn, you name it. Great environmentally friendly tour company.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I choose the 3 day Rinjani trek over the 2 day package?

The 3-day trek offers a more immersive and rewarding experience of Mount Rinjani National Park compared to the faster-paced 2-day package. While the 2-day trek is designed for those focused solely on reaching the summit in the shortest time, the 3-day option allows you to explore additional highlights, such as Segara Anak Lake and its natural hot springs, providing a chance to relax and recover after the summit climb.

The 3-day trek also includes camping at Senaru Crater Rim, offering incredible views over the lush valleys and forests below. This extra day makes the itinerary less rushed, giving you more time to enjoy and appreciate Rinjani’s diverse landscapes. If you’re looking for a more balanced adventure that combines the thrill of the summit with opportunities to unwind and take in the park’s iconic features, the 3-day trek is the ideal choice.

Is the 3 day Rinjani trek easier than the 2 day option?

The 3-day and 2-day Rinjani treks are not directly comparable in terms of difficulty—they offer different routes with distinct experiences, though both include the summit climb. The 2-day trek is a direct route designed for those focused solely on reaching the summit in the shortest possible time. It’s a fast-paced option with long trekking hours and minimal time to rest or explore.

The 3-day trek, on the other hand, provides a more comprehensive journey through Mount Rinjani National Park, including visits to Segara Anak Lake and its rejuvenating hot springs. This itinerary allows trekkers to experience more of Rinjani’s iconic landscapes and enjoy additional highlights at a less rushed pace. While it involves more trekking overall, the balanced schedule and scenic stops make it an incredibly rewarding option for those looking to fully immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the park.

Is it possible to swim in Lake Segara Anak? Is it safe?

Yes, it is possible to swim in Lake Segara Anak, and many trekkers find it refreshing after a long climb. The lake’s crystal-clear waters provide a serene setting for a quick dip, offering a chance to cool off and enjoy the breathtaking surroundings.

However, safety is important to keep in mind. While the lake is generally safe for swimming, the water can be very cold, so it’s best to limit your time in the water to avoid discomfort or hypothermia. Additionally, the lake has varying depths, so strong swimming skills are recommended. Always follow your guide’s advice, as they are familiar with the area and can ensure you swim in a safe spot.

For those who prefer to relax rather than swim, the nearby hot springs are an excellent alternative, offering soothing warmth to ease tired muscles.

How long will we get to relax at the lake and hot springs?

The amount of time spent at Segara Anak Lake and the hot springs depends on the pace of your group and the chosen itinerary. Typically, trekkers on the 3-day trek have around 1–2 hours to relax by the lake, swim, or soak in the hot springs before continuing the journey.

If you’re on the 4-day trek, there’s often more time to enjoy these highlights, as the itinerary allows for a more relaxed pace, with the option to camp at the lake. For the 2-day trek, the lake and hot springs are not included due to the limited timeframe.

Your guide will ensure the schedule is well-balanced, giving you time to unwind while keeping the trek on track. If you’d like extra time at these locations, let your guide know—they’ll do their best to accommodate your preferences.

What do I need to pack for the 3 Day / 2 Night Mt Rinjani Trek?

Packing the right items is essential for a comfortable and enjoyable trek. Here’s what we recommend:

  • Clothing: Comfortable hiking clothes, warm layers for the cooler temperatures at higher altitudes, and a waterproof jacket.
  • Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good grip.
  • Swimwear & Towel: For relaxing in the hot springs or swimming in Segara Anak Lake.
  • Personal Items: Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and personal medication.
  • Backpack: A small daypack to carry your essentials during the trek (porters will carry the camping and cooking equipment).
  • Other Essentials: A flashlight or headlamp, extra batteries, and reusable water bottles (refillable along the route).

Rinjani Dawn Adventures provides many items free of charge, including trekking poles, warm jackets, gloves, and hats. You can also borrow sleeping bags, sleeping mats, and camping gear.

For a comprehensive list, refer to our Rinjani Guide and FAQ, which you’ll receive after booking. Our team is here to help you prepare for this incredible adventure!

Is the 3 Day Mount Rinjani trek suitable for beginners?

The 3-day Mount Rinjani trek is challenging but can be suitable for determined beginners with a reasonable base level of fitness and a positive mindset. While prior trekking experience is not required, the route includes steep ascents, uneven terrain, and long trekking hours, which may be demanding for those unaccustomed to such activity.

The inclusion of highlights like Segara Anak Lake and the hot springs offers moments to relax and recharge, making the trek more balanced compared to the intense 2-day summit package. However, the trek still requires stamina and grit to complete.

If you’re unsure whether the 3-day trek is right for you, consider starting with our Lombok Explorer Package or Senaru Crater Rim Trek, which offer incredible views with less strenuous climbing. Whatever you choose, our experienced guides will support you every step of the way!

What time does the trek usually finish on Day 3?

The trek typically finishes in Senaru Village between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM, depending on the group’s pace, weather conditions, and the number of breaks taken during the descent.

After completing the trek, you’ll have time to enjoy refreshments at Cafe Rinjani Dawn, where you can relax, recover, and collect any belongings left in storage. From there, transport will be ready to take you back to your hotel or onward destination.

If you have specific travel plans, such as catching a boat to the Gili Islands or a flight, please let us know in advance so we can assist with your schedule.

Do I have to share a tent with a stranger when doing the 3 day Rinjani trek?

No, you won’t have to share a tent with a stranger unless you’re comfortable doing so. We arrange tent-sharing for groups of the same gender or for people traveling together (such as couples or friends). If you’d prefer your own private tent, we can accommodate this – just let us know when you book.

Our tents are spacious, comfortable, and equipped with clean sleeping bags, sleeping mats, and fresh liners to ensure you have a restful night in the great outdoors.

Can you accommodate dietary requirements such as vegan, vegetarian, celiac, etc during the 3 day Mount Rinjani Trek?

Yes, we can accommodate a wide range of dietary requirements, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and lactose-free diets, as well as Halal meals. Our guides and porters are experienced in preparing fresh, nutritious meals on the mountain, tailored to meet your needs.

To ensure we can cater to your preferences, please let us know about any dietary requirements when booking your trek. This allows us to plan the menu and bring the necessary ingredients to make your experience as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

If you have any specific questions or concerns about meals, don’t hesitate to contact us—we’re happy to help!

What is the total distance covered on the 3 day Mount Rinjani trek?

The total distance of the 3-day Mount Rinjani trek is approximately 33.6 km. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Day 1: 9.6 km from Sembalun Village (1,060m) to Sembalun Crater Rim (2,620m).
  • Day 2: 13.5 km including the summit climb, descent to Segara Anak Lake and hot springs, and the ascent to Senaru Crater Rim.
  • Day 3: 10.5 km descending from Senaru Crater Rim to Senaru Village.

This distance combines a mix of steep ascents, descents, and varied terrain, offering a challenging but rewarding adventure through the breathtaking landscapes of Mount Rinjani National Park.

What happens if I feel I cannot continue after going to the summit, can I turn back?

Yes, it is possible to return to Sembalun instead of continuing the trek. However, this will incur an extra fee to cover the additional transport costs.

A guide or porter will accompany you safely down the mountain to Sembalun Village. Once you arrive, our driver will meet you and transfer you back to Senaru, where you can rest and collect any belongings left in storage.

We prioritize your safety and comfort at all times. If you’re unsure about your stamina or fitness level, please discuss your concerns with us when booking, and consider alternative options like the Senaru Crater Rim Trek or Lombok Explorer Package.

How likely is it that I will be affected by altitude sickness during the 3 day Mount Rinjani summit trek?

The risk of altitude sickness on Mount Rinjani is relatively low compared to higher peaks, as the summit elevation is 3,726m (12,224ft). However, some trekkers may still experience mild symptoms, particularly during the summit climb, which involves a rapid ascent.

Common Symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath

Factors That Influence Altitude Sickness:

  • Individual Sensitivity: Some people are more prone to altitude sickness than others, regardless of fitness level.
  • Rate of Ascent: The trek includes steep climbs, particularly on Day 2 when you ascend from the crater rim to the summit.
  • Hydration and Rest: Staying well-hydrated and getting enough rest can help minimize symptoms.

What We Do to Help:

Our experienced guides are trained to monitor for signs of altitude sickness and will adjust the pace to suit the group. If you experience symptoms, they will provide guidance and ensure your safety. Descending to a lower elevation typically alleviates symptoms quickly.

If you have concerns, consider discussing them with a medical professional before the trek. For those wanting a less intense adventure, the Senaru Crater Rim Trek or Lombok Explorer Package are excellent alternatives.

We have our own transport, can you offer us a discount?

Yes, absolutely. If you do not require us to supply transport to and from our office in Senaru, we can offer you a generous discount. Please contact us for a final quote.

Do you offer discounts for group bookings?
