About The Adventure

A Challenging Trek to Rinjani Second Summit

The 2 Day / 1 Night Second Summit Trek (Puncak Sangkareang) is a rewarding alternative for those who want big views and a genuine mountain experience, without the intensity of Rinjani’s main summit.

Beginning in Senaru Village, the trek climbs steadily through rainforest to Senaru Crater Rim, where you’ll camp overlooking Lake Segara Anak and the dramatic volcanic landscape below. The pace is challenging but manageable, making it well suited to fit couples and small groups.

Early on Day 2, you’ll continue to Puncak Sangkareang, Rinjani’s second summit. While lower and less demanding than the main peak, it offers exceptional views over the crater lake – often considered among the best on the mountain.

After breakfast, you’ll descend back through the forest to Senaru Village, completing a compact, scenic trek that delivers altitude, perspective, and solitude – without pushing into extreme territory.

This trek is ideal for those seeking a slightly easier summit experience that still captures the scale and beauty of Mount Rinjani.

Tour Plan

Day 1

Summary:

Day 1: Senaru Village to Senaru Crater Rim

Day 1 of the Rinjani Second Summit Trek (Puncak Sangkareang) begins in
Senaru Village, located at approximately 600 metres above sea level,
with breakfast and a full pre-trek briefing at Cafe Rinjani Dawn. Here, you’ll meet your
guide team, check equipment, and receive an overview of the route, pacing, and safety procedures for the trek ahead.

After the briefing, the trek begins with a steady ascent through lush tropical rainforest.
Covering a distance of around 9 kilometres, the trail climbs gradually, with shaded sections
and regular rest stops along the way. This prolonged uphill hike requires a good level of fitness but is paced
to allow steady progress and acclimatisation.

By late afternoon, you’ll reach the Senaru Crater Rim campsite, perched at an elevation of
2,641 metres. From here, you’re rewarded with sweeping views over
Lake Segara Anak, the volcanic crater, and the surrounding valleys — a dramatic introduction
to Mount Rinjani National Park.

Once camp is set, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner cooked by your porters as the sun sets over the crater.
On clear evenings, the stargazing from the crater rim is exceptional. You’ll then retire to your tent for a
well-earned rest, preparing for the early-morning ascent toward Puncak Sangkareang on Day 2.

We focus on personalized experiences, environmental sustainability, and community engagement. Our ‘leave no trace’ policy and passion for Lombok’s culture and nature make us unique.

What is the best time of year to climb Mount Rinjani?

Trekking Mount Rinjani is best done during the dry season (April to November), when weather conditions are favorable for trekking and the views are spectacular. The season runs from 1st April to 31st December.

When did Mount Rinjani last erupt? Is it safe?

Mount Rinjani last erupted in 2016, and since then, its activity has been closely monitored by Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center. Trekking is considered safe, as the park authorities only allow access when conditions are stable. Safety is our top priority, and we stay updated on all volcanic activity to ensure the well-being of our trekkers.

Our guides have many years experience guiding on the mountain, and are trained in first aid. We also provide high-quality equipment and carefully plan itineraries to ensure a safe and enjoyable trek.

What is your average group size?

Group size depends on the tour package, but the average is 4-6 people. Our minimum number to run a trek is 2 people unless an individual wants to pay for a private trek. Private treks can be arranged for groups at no extra cost—in fact, we offer discounts for group bookings of four or more people.

Yes, we do offer discounts for group bookings of over 4 PAX. These are usually done on a sliding scale, with a discount for a booking of 4-7 PAX, and a greater discount for group bookings of more than 8 PAX.

No, accommodation is not included in our standard treks, as many people travel to Senaru on the morning of the trek. Not including accommodation allows us to keep the cost of the trek down. Some of our multi-day packages do include accommodation—please check out the individual tour pages for more information.

How does Rinjani Dawn Adventures support the local community on Lombok Island?

We set-up our Sasak Warriors initiative in 2018, which provides food aid, education, and environmental support to local communities. A percentage of our trekking and restaurant profit, and 100% of profits from our Sasak Warriors merch go to this cause.

What should I know about trekking permits for Mount Rinjani?

All trekkers need an official permit to enter Gunung Rinjani National Park. We handle all permit arrangements as part of our tour packages, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

What is the best waterfall to visit on Lombok?
