Sasak Warriors Community Initiative

Launched by Rinjani Dawn Adventures in the aftermath of the 2018 Lombok Earthquakes, the Sasak Warriors initiative was born out of a commitment to rebuild and uplift our local community. In those early days, we delivered water, food, and medical supplies to affected villages and raised funds to rebuild 10 houses for families who lost everything. Since then, Sasak Warriors has evolved to focus on environmental sustainability and food-aid programs, with a special emphasis on supporting single mothers and the most vulnerable members of our community.

Sasak Warriors: Empowering Lombok Communities in 2025

Launched in the aftermath of the 2018 Lombok Earthquakes, the Sasak Warriors initiative was born out of a commitment to rebuild and uplift our local communities.

Challenges in Senaru and Batukok

Senaru and Batukok, nestled in the foothills of Mount Rinjani, are home to close-knit communities rich in culture but often struggling with limited resources.

  1. Low Incomes and Economic Struggles
The majority of families in these villages rely on subsistence farming or low-wage jobs. With average monthly incomes often below $200 USD, many households face difficulties meeting basic needs such as nutritious food and healthcare. Seasonal work and unpredictable weather further exacerbate economic instability.
  2. Diet and Malnutrition
Local diets are often limited to staples like rice, cassava, and basic vegetables, with little access to protein or nutrient-rich foods. This lack of dietary diversity leads to malnutrition, particularly among children and the elderly. The Sasak Warriors food-aid program addresses this by providing balanced meals, including fresh vegetables and protein sources.
  3. Limited Access to Education
Education in rural Lombok faces significant barriers. While schools exist, many children drop out early to help support their families or because of the lack of reliable transportation. Girls are especially affected, as cultural expectations often prioritize household roles over formal education.
  4. Environmental Challenges
Waste management is a growing issue, with limited awareness of recycling and sustainability. Plastic waste often ends up burned or in rivers, harming both the environment and public health. Sasak Warriors aims to tackle this through education programs and community engagement.

By addressing these interconnected challenges, the Sasak Warriors initiative is not just offering short-term solutions but working towards long-term, sustainable improvements in quality of life.

2024 Highlights: Building Momentum

This past year marked a significant step forward for Sasak Warriors. With the opening of Cafe Rinjani Dawn, we committed to funding our Friday food-aid program, which delivers meals to Senaru and Batukok’s poorest villagers. Profits from the café, sales of Sasak Warriors merchandise at Summit Souvenirs, and tours operated by Rinjani Dawn Adventures have enabled us to provide over 2,500 meals to those in need. The community response has been overwhelmingly positive, reaffirming our belief in the power of grassroots action.

Looking Ahead: 2025 Goals

As we look to 2025, we aim to deepen the impact of Sasak Warriors through these key initiatives:

  1. Continuing Food-Aid Donations
The weekly food-aid program remains at the heart of Sasak Warriors, ensuring consistent support for families facing financial hardships.
  2. Promoting Sustainable Farming
In partnership with Saifana Organic Farm, we’ve established a thriving kitchen garden at Cafe Rinjani Dawn, growing fresh, organic produce like ginger, turmeric, radish, and lemongrass. This garden not only supplies our café but also serves as a model for sustainable farming practices. With Saifana’s guidance, we’re training our staff and empowering the local community to embrace eco-friendly farming.
  3. Environmental Awareness through Education
    • International Schools: Collaborating with visiting school groups to discuss Lombok’s environmental challenges, including waste management and sustainable tourism.
    • Local Schools: Organizing workshops on recycling and sustainability, fostering awareness and responsible habits among local children.
  4. Expanding Community Impact: The School Bus Project
One of our most ambitious goals is raising $30,000 USD for a school bus that will also function as a community ambulance. This dual-purpose vehicle will provide children in remote areas with access to education and serve as a critical resource for medical emergencies. While our initial fundraising efforts fell short, we remain committed to making this vision a reality in 2025.

Using Tourism for Positive Impact

At Rinjani Dawn Adventures, we believe that tourism can be a force for good. By connecting travelers with Lombok’s breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture, we create opportunities to give back to the communities that make these experiences possible. Every tour we operate directly supports initiatives like the Sasak Warriors food-aid program and environmental education projects.

Our tours are designed to leave a positive footprint by promoting responsible trekking, cultural appreciation, and environmental awareness. For instance, we use a ‘leave no trace’ policy to preserve the pristine beauty of Mount Rinjani and other natural attractions, and we hire local guides, ensuring that tourism dollars stay within the community.

When you book a tour with us, you’re not just embarking on an adventure—you’re contributing to sustainable development and helping to empower local communities. From trekking Mount Rinjani to exploring hidden waterfalls, your journey supports initiatives that create a lasting impact.
